Selling secret #6 How Important is Your Selling Costume? When I was in grade school I acted in several children’s theatre productions in our town. I remember we would practice for over a month. Then when it got closer to opening night we would start wearing our costumes during rehearsals. The costumes were what helped bring the show to life for both the actors and the audience. Actors don’t go on stage with the wrong costume on. If during the funeral scene the grieving widow walked on stage in a clowns costume instead of a black dress it could destroy the entire mood of the show. “The better the show the more the dough you make.”In sales there is a saying, “The better the show the more the dough you make.” But over the years I’ve seen too many salespeople walk on stage (greet the customer) in the wrong costume that destroyed the entire sale. How should you dress when selling? My general rule is, the more expensive the products you sell are the more professional you should dress. Typically the more professional you dress the more professional you are perceived by the customer. If you were a customer making a $35,000 automobile purchase which would you prefer. Would you rather have a professional assisting you with your purchase or would you rather have someone who looks like they were flipping hamburgers last week in their last job? Before you go to work each day look in the mirror and ask yourself the following. Would I have confidence in the advice of a salesperson dressed in this costume?
