5 Tips to Get a
Retail Management Job Fast

Would you like to advance into a retail management job? Do you feel stuck in your current job? Do you see less talented people getting promoted right over you? If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions you need to know the following.

I have had the opportunity to promote many people from sales positions into retail management job positions over the years. I have learned to identify what traits in people make them good managers. So this tips list is much more than just what will get you promoted. It is also about what will help you succeed once you are promoted.

Five Tips to Retail Management Job Advancement

  1. Be a Top Performer- If you’re in sales you don’t have to be the number one salesperson in the company, but you should be an above salesperson. And the more above average the better. The company feels if you’re a top performer you have a good chance of being able to teach others how to be a top performer. A good manager creates other top performers. That is typically one of the important ways senior management measures a manager’s effectiveness. So if you want a retail management job be a top sales performer.

  2. Have Good People Skills- A good manager manages people by example. You can start managing or leading by example in your current position. Be the best you can be. By doing this many of your peers will follow your example. If you’re consistent with this you will get noticed my management. And that can be good news for you when they look to fill a management opening.

We can all use improvement when it comes to our people skills. One of the best books I have ever read to help improve my people’s skills is Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People". If you are serious about wanting a retail management job get this book and start reading it NOW! (You can thank me later.)

  3. Let them Know You want a Management Position- Some people get upset when they get passed over for a promotion. When I talk to them about it I discover they never told anyone in management they wanted to be considered for a management position. Managers can’t read your mind you need to tell them.

But instead of saying like some do, “give me, give me, I want, I want a promotion,” try a different approach. You may want to ask, “What can I do to prepare myself to advance into management?” A self starter like that is looked on as a good management candidate.

An Excellent Way to Start Your Management Career

If your company has an assistant sales manager training program that is a great program to ask about. You’ll get good preparation training and will be next in line to be considered for an assistant manager opening. I’m involved in a training program that trains a large number of assistant sales managers in the Phoenix area. Many of these people have gone on to become sales managers making six figure incomes. If you want a retail management job this is an excellent way to start on your management career path.

  4. Be a Problem Solver- Here is a powerful advancement rule to follow. If you go to your boss with a problem always bring with you one or more practical solutions you can implement that costs little to nothing. Be the idea person with good ideas that solve problems.

Here is a great way to NOT get picked for a promotion. Be a whiner and complainer with no solutions. In other words be a victim. This is the kiss of death approach when it comes to getting a promotion. Yet amazingly, a lot of people try that approach. Sometimes they get stuck there for their entire career. If you want a retail management job be a solutions person not a complainer.

  5. Recruit People for Your Company- If you recruit other good people to work for your company you will get noticed. Getting good people is a big part a most sales managers jobs. Telling your friends and acquaintances what a great company you work for and encouraging them to apply for openings is something you don’t have to wait until you’re a manager to do. Just make sure they would make good employees. Do this and you’ll be on the fast track to a retail management job.

I speak from years of promoting people into management experience. If you follow the above five tips you will gain a big advantage over your competition for management openings.
