A Relocation Cover Letter
that Gets You the Appointment

A relocation cover letter sent to a distant employer needs a slightly different twist than a cover letter sent to a local employer. Relocation cover letters can be effective if they are written well. I will show you how write a successful one in a minute, but first let’s recognize three employer issues you need to face when you want to relocate.

Three Employer Issues

1.) Many employers are reluctant to even consider an out of town applicant unless it is for a senior level or difficult position to fill. A big reason for their concern is the relocation costs.

2.) Employers also question if you are serious about making a major relocation move, or are you just exploring your options.

3.) Employers can also be concerned about the hassle and expense that is added to the interviewing process with an out of town applicant.

I'll show you how to handle each effectively in a relocation cover letter.

Your First Question

One of the first questions you want to ask yourself is, “Am I going to move to Phoenix with or with a job offer, or will I only move there with a good job offer?”

If your background is not one of a senior sales executive and you are going to relocate to Phoenix with or without a job offer, then I suggest you set a move date. Now you can mention that fact right up front in your relocation cover letter. By doing this you just eliminated their three big relocation concerns.

For example you might say, “I have a two year track record of successful outside sales experience selling widgets. My family and I are relocating to Phoenix next month on May 18th and I would like the opportunity to meet with you regarding your opening for an outside widget salesperson…”

Relocation Issues Solved

If they are interested in you, they will now feel comfortable setting up an interview date with you for when you get to town. In effect you will no longer be a relocation issue because you will have already moved here. If you’re moving here anyway, it’s sure better to move with one or several good interviews set up than with nothing.

So how do you create the rest of your relocation cover letter? It’s simple, just follow my steps in write a cover letter and use my cover letter example as your guide.

You are laying important ground work when you take the time to do your cover letter right. This can make a big difference in what company doors you get into and what job offers you get.
