What are the advancement opportunities with a Phoenix automotive sales job? They could be great or they could be rotten depending on three factors.

1. The dealership you work at - There are a lot of great dealerships to work at and there are a lot of bad dealerships to work at. The good news is, you can find the good ones and avoid the bad ones with some great insider clues to use in your job search. The classified ads all sound wonderful but these clues will get you to the truth fast.

2. Your commitment to succeed - Your willingness to go the extra mile for your customers will determine your success. Your determination to turn your time into money is very important. For the "average" person in a Phoenix automotive sales job their daily goof off time is significant. Don't be "average" commit to be your best.

3. Your skills - Even if you're at a great dealership and are very committed to succeed, advancement may never come if you don’t posses the needed skills to succeed. How do you gain those skills? You need to receive the right kind of effective automotive training. I have seen this significantly accelerate countless people’s career advancement.

Once you understand those three factors now it’s time to look at:

• Salesperson - This is where it all starts. Many automotive sales professionals make a very successful career in this position their entire working life. I know people like that who make a consistent six figure income. They work exclusively by appointment with their loyal and happy customers. This type of career gives them great freedom and flexibility. But for those who want to go into management let’s look at the next step.

• Assistant Sales Manager (ASM) - In the position of ASM you manage a team of salespeople usually from 5 to 10 in size. You are responsible to help recruit your team. You also train and manage your team. You will be responsible to identify and develop future managers from your team. You assist your team members in closing sales. This is the ideal management training opportunity position. In one way it’s like you are running your own mini dealership.

• Finance Manager - In the position of finance manager you work with a wide variety of banks and finance companies to assist customers in getting their automobiles financed. You also make available to customers financing related protection products. These financial products would include, credit life and accident & health insurance, extended service contracts, and GAP insurance. This position will teach you an important part of the car selling process.

• Sales Manager - I mentioned earlier the ASM position has a more people management focus. The sales manager position is also people focused, they manage the ASMs. A sales manager has a second major focus, the numbers. They control the negotiation process. The sales manager is responsible for a broader picture than the ASM.

• Senior Management - Next comes the department heads such as the new car director, used car director, finance director, fleet director and internet director. These department heads would report to the general sales manager. The general sales manager reports directly to the general manager of the entire dealership. Many times the general manager will own part or all of the dealership.

So as you can see with a Phoenix automotive sales job there is plenty of room for advancement. But that is assuming you’re at the right dealership, have the right commitment and poses the right skills. (See above three advancement factors.)
