How to Prepare for an Interview to Win the Ideal Job
Why is how to prepare for an interview such an important question? I think Bobby Knight said it well: “It isn’t the will to win that’s important, everybody has the will to win. What’s important is the will to prepare to win.” If you’re going to win in an interview you must prepare to win in three ways. Three Ways to Prepare to Win in a Job Interview FIRST How to Prepare for an Interview Mentally - Typically an interview is comprised of a series of questions and answers. to work for. Doing five simple steps will give you a serious knowledge advantage over the other applicants. They say “Knowledge is power.” This will give you a powerful reserve to effectively answer many of the employer’s questions. It will also enable you to ask some insightful questions of your own. It demonstrates to the interviewer that you are really interested in this job and company. You will be able to better match your skills and talents to the company’s need and wants. You’ll also gain a quiet confidence which is a wonderful thing to have in an interview. SECOND How to Prepare for an Interview Physically - In an interview over 90% of your body is covered with clothing. THIRD How to Prepare for an Interview in Spirit - It is so important you go into a job interview with an upbeat, positive spirit. To get that winning spirit here are some things to remember.
- SW SW SW N – This is a principle I teach my sales students. It stands for, some will, some won’t, so what, next. Understand selling (and interviewing) is a numbers game. No one likes no’s but it’s all in how you look at it. I was taught when I first got into sales many years ago that every no gets you closer to your next yes. For me this takes the pressure off that one sale and I relax. When I relax I do better.
- Luck – It’s said, “Luck is the collision of opportunity and preparation.” I know for me the more preparation I put into something the luckier I seem to get. When I’m prepared I’m more confident and positive about what I am doing. So prepare and get that lucky interviewing feeling.
- Pray – I'll have a silent prayer before a job interview or before an important appointment with a prospect. I know God sees a much bigger picture than I do. When I put my faith in Him, after I have done all that I can do, things always seem to work out better.
Once I interviewed for a very important job that seemed perfect for me. I prayed for the Lord’s will to be done and I didn’t get the job. Three weeks later I interviewed for an even better job that looked like the ideal position for me. I prayed for the Lord’s will to be done and again I didn’t get the job. Over a month later I interviewed for a job far superior to the two previous jobs, it was beyond what I thought I could get. Still I prayed for the Lord’s will to be done and this time I got an amazing job. Looking back on that experience I am so grateful I got those first two no’s. The Lord had something much better in mind for me. If I had prayed for my will to be done, instead of the Lord’s will, I may have ended up with a much lesser job. How to prepare for an interview has to do with three things. First, be mentally sharp. Second, physically look good and professional. Third, have a winning spirit. Do that and you will put yourself in a position to be “lucky” when it comes to getting that sales job you really want.
