What You Must First Know about an Automotive Sales Job
It is true according to the US Department of Labor an automotive sales job
pays nearly double
what other retail sales jobs pay.
As great as big paychecks are there is something you must understand about a job in automotive sale. One dealership’s opening for an automotive sales job can become the job of your dreams and another dealership’s opening may become a job nightmare.
Understanding this can work to Your Advantage
Once you understand this, it’s just a matter of looking for the “right clues” to find the dealership that could hold the sales job of your dreams. Let’s examine the clues:
Clues to Look for to Find the Automotive Sales Job of Your Dreams
- Customer Satisfaction Rating (CSI) - In an interview ask to see the dealership’s CSI rating. If it’s a good dealership they will be proud to show it to you. If the dealership’s ratings are equal to their district, or zone, or national ratings, or better, that is good. If they are below those benchmark ratings that is bad. Why is their CSI rating so important to you? I have found that how a company treats their customers is the same way they treat their employees.
- Benefits - When they explain what their company benefits are listen. Do they offer a 401k plan and historically has there been a good company match, and how much? Do they offer the important insurances: medical, dental, eye, and disability. Even if these things don’t mean a lot to you now, they say a lot about the company’s attitude toward their employees.
- Advancement Opportunities - Ask which of their current managers were promoted from within and which were hired from the outside. Then ask to meet some of the ones promoted from within. This will tell you real fast if advancement opportunities there are real or just cheap talk.
- Training Program - Ask about the specifics of their sales training program, the curriculum, the manual, the length. Also ask about the specifics of their ongoing training. As I’ve mentioned I am the director of training for one of the largest automotive groups in the nation. Check
here for an example
of what a professional sales training program should look like. If they don’t have a serious training program it says they are not willing to invest much in you. And if a dealership, or their third party trainer, asks you to pay for the initial sales training -- run away fast.
