The Secret to Getting Automotive Finance Manager Jobs

Automotive finance manager jobs:
How do you get one of these high paying finance manager jobs? Some people have a misconception regarding what it takes to get one of these elite jobs. First I’d like to briefly mention these misconceptions because some qualified people will disqualify themselves because of the following:

Misconceptions on what it takes to qualify
for automotive finance manager jobs

  • Educational background - Some people think because this is a finance manager job you need a degree in finance or accounting. Not true. I know successful finance managers with all types of educational backgrounds. They range from high school degrees, to associate degrees, to bachelors degrees, to masters degrees. Many finance managers have college degrees but their degrees may be in music, biology, education or whatever. I was an automotive finance manager and I happened to have a degree in accounting. I must admit my accounting degree gave me no special advantage. If you can use a computer (like the one you’re using) that will be fine.

  • Experience background - Some people think you need a financial career background like being a banker, mortgage broker or stock broker. Not true. Those backgrounds are fine but so are cell phone salespeople, hotel and restaurant staff or graphic designers. Some type of past sales job can be helpful but is not required.

  • Automotive background - Some people think you need an extensive automotive career background. Not true again. It is very helpful to have had some experience working in an automobile dealership but it is not required.

Here is what I recommend you do have:

  • Good sales foundation - As a finance manager you are selling intangible products that relate to the financing of a customer’s vehicle purchase. You assist the customer after they have already agreed to purchase the vehicle. Some kind of sales or customer service background may give you an advantage here. I had some sales experience before I became a finance manager and that was a much bigger help to me than my accounting degree.

  • Understand the automotive process - Most good finance managers I know started out spending some time as a car salesperson. This would be a good help in understanding the complete selling process. Just six months experience would be good and I know some who after three months of selling cars moved up to be a finance manager.

Having some automobile sales experience gives you greater confidence, better understanding of the bigger picture, and greater opportunity to advance within the finance department and beyond the finance department. Briefly selling cars first is a decision you will always be grateful you made as you advance in your career.

  • Get the right training - No matter what your background you must make sure you get the right training for automotive finance manager jobs. This is a very specialized area and upfront training before you start is critical to your success. Any credible finance manager program is a full week of highly intensive training. I was fortunate to receive that type of training and it made all the difference in my success. Also, you should never have to pay for this training. Any credible dealership will make that training investment in you. If you are asked to pay for the training run (don’t walk) away.

If you think you would like to be a finance manager and want to increase your success rate with some brief, but important, automotive sales experience you may want to check out this free auto sales training scholarship program.

I did both, sold cars and was a finance manager, and doing it that way has benifited my career immensely.
